The Languedoc-Roussillon region stays ahead
Varied production
In 2006, harvest forecasts of 56.3 million hL were made in France.
The Languedoc-Roussillon region (16 million hL) is the largest producer ahead of the Aquitaine region (8 million hectolitres), Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur (4.5 million hL) and Rhône-Alpes (2.9 million hL). In little under 20 years, the Languedoc-Roussillon region has gone from a production rate of 29 million hL to between 15 million hL to 20 million hL. The reduction is the result of considerable clearing of vines and an ambitious policy to develop wines with a better reputation. The 1980s saw the creation of appellations or the development of already existing appellations in Languedoc (granting of the AOC in 1982 for the Faugères and Saint-Chinian, in 1985 for the Coteaux du Languedoc, Corbieres and Minervois, in 2006 for Malepère).

A mixed production
Production in the Languedoc-Roussillon region is varied and can be divided into two main categories: on one hand quality wines from a specific region (VQPRD) most of which are AOC (still wines and natural sweet wines), and on the other hand table wines, most of which are country wines: from departments (Aude, Herault etc), or grape types (generally Vins de pays d’Oc) and sometimes by area (Vin de pays of Carcassonne, Vin de pays from Côtes de Thongue etc). |
The production in Languedoc, Roussillon and the Vallée du Rhône in the gard of quality wines from a specific region (VQPRD) accounts for 16% of the Languedoc-Roussillon volumes. With 3 089 000 hl of production, these are the second best vineyards in terms of quality after the vineyards of Aquitaine.
The Languedoc AOC vineyards alone are in fourth position in terms of quality in France.
